Newspapers play a very important role in our lives. We cannot imagine a single day without the newspaper at our doorstep every morning. No matter how much of a hurry we are in, there is always time for a quick look at the headlines, which tell us at a glance what is happening all over the world. The toppling of a monarchy, the forming of a new government, the winning or losing of a cricket match; an earthquake, an aeroplane crash, a train accident; the loves and lives of celebrities, the tragedies of the common man, are all covered in the fifteen odd sheets which comprise a newspaper.
There is hardly any aspect of life which is not covered by a newspaper. Apart from news, it gives us valuable information in the form of advertisements, notices and reviews. Expert writers give their opinions on politics, society, films, art, drama and books. Newspapers bring awareness and consciousness to the literate public and spur it to independent thought and action.
It is a well-established fact that newspapers are important — nobody can deny that. But one should not take to heart every word that is printed in them. We should exercise our discrimination while reading the news. Sometimes newspapers can be instrumental in instigating people to do wrong things.
In spite of television, newspapers are still the most effective and influential means of communication with the citizens of the world. Hence, they have a grave responsibility to society.
