Floods

Apart from the monsoon rains, due to depression in the bay, cyclonic whether sets in and storm causes heavy rainfall unexpectedly So, low lying areas and areas across which the cyclone passes through are affected by the heavy down pour of rain and our flowing of rivers canals and tanks

Breaches in tanks, overflowing rivers and heavy rain fall are the causes of floods. More damage is caused to human lives and property on account of flood.  Communication is brought to a standstill and people are stranded in flooded areas with remote chances of help being rendered to them in time.

Sometimes, when perennial rivers like the Ganges, Jumna and Brahmaputra are in spate due to the melting of the mountain snow, we find normal life being upset on the regions through which these rivers flow. Often we find the Brahmaputra upsetting the normal life in Assam by its floods.

Sometimes the rivers due to obstruction or of their volition change their courses and entet into towns and villages, causing heavy havoc.

Hundreds of villages are destroyed our night by these floods. Thousands of men and animals meet with unexpected death

People have to leave their villages and home towns and resort to a miserable life in strange and distant places. Lives of the people who inhabit the banks of big rivers have become really unsafe.

We have come across instances where big cities like Surat and Baroda brought under water by unexpected floods.

Recently Andhra Pradesh had the blatant attack of the floods resulting in the loss of innumerable lives of men and cattle. Never in the history of this country, similar floods have made inroads into its important cities like Hyderabad and Secundrabad. Water rushed into the paved streets blocking-the two cities from being reached by road or-rail for several days. Many houses collapsed and many people lost their lives.

Flood control measures are now contemplated and brought into effective operation Bitter experiences of the past have set our engineers and planners to think about seriously.

The bund walls of tanks are raised and the outflow of water is systematically controlled. Banks of wild rivers are being strengthened to prevent outflow. Strong dams across rivers regulate the water level and flow.

Immediate relief measures are taken up to remove people and property from low lying areas to a higher level. The service of the armed forces are to be fully utilized to help end protect the person and property.
