Kamakhya Temple
The most famous temple in Guwahati is Kamakhya Temple located on the Nilachal hill. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati, an in-carnation of Durga. It has been a principal center for Tantric Hinduism and Shakti worship.
Kamakhya Temple was rebuilt in 1665 after it was destroyed. The Assamese architectural features like beehive-shaped sikhara (spire) and the nymph are aptly demonstrated in the temple. It is studded with figures representing gods and goddesses of Hindu Purana. The dark sanctum contains the creative part of the goddess which is said to have fallen here.
The Kamakhya Temple is one of the Shakti ‘Peethas’ or holy spots. Kamakhya temple is also known as ‘Yoni Peetha’. The temple becomes most fascinating during the Ambuchi festival organised every year in August.
