Every year, India celebrates its Republic Day on 26th January. India became a Republic country on 26th January 1950, after the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar came into force. Entire country celebrates this day as a national festival. It is celebrated with great passion all over the nation. The citizens feel proud of their nation. Throughout the country, a public holiday is declared on this day.
Arrangements for this day are done in advance. Schools and other educational bodies alt over the country celebrate the Republic Day. On this day, the flag is hoisted on important Government buildings like Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, etc. When the flag is unfurled, everybody stands in attention. In schools, March Past is performed by students. They unfurl the National Flag and salute it. Patriotic songs are sung by them.
A wonderful celebration at Rashtrapati Bhavan is organized, which is broadcasted on the television. Everyone is happy. The Prime Minister pays respect to martyrs and thousands of soldiers who laid down their lives for the cause of the nation. This celebration takes place at Amar JawanJyoti at India Gate. Then the President comes from Rashtrapati Bhavan to hoist the National Flag. As the head of the country, he gives his inspirational speech to the entire nation. National Anthem is sung by children of various schools. Later military and police officers are awarded with Peacetime Gallantry Awards like the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra for their brave deeds. It is a very proud moment.
Each year Republic Day parade takes place at Rashtrapati Bhavan in India’s capital city, Delhi. The soldiers smartly do their march. Indian Army, Navy and Air force display the arms possessed by the county. Different war tanks, missiles and weapons make a part of the parade. The helicopters and jet planes of Air force perform different stunts in the sky. The main attraction of the program is each state showing its culture and tradition through jhankis. Even folk dances of different states are performed by different cultural groups.
Republic Day spreads the feelings of love, unity, brotherhood, affection and goodwill among people belonging to different religions. This is the day when we remember and pay homage to the heroes who fought to achieve India’s freedom.
National festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day must be celebrated in grand style because it helps in keeping the patriotic spirit alive within us. Do you celebrate them as other festivals?

Republic Day
India won its freedom on August 15, 1947 and became a Republic on January 26, 1950. The new Constitution of free India took effect from this day. Since that year 26 January is being celebrated as Republic Day with a lot of pomp and show, for it is indeed a great day in the history of India.
26 January is a national holiday in India. In the morning, there is a flag hoisting ceremony; people from far and near gather to witness this scene. They salute the flag after which there is a speech by the chief guest. We are reminded of all the people who lost their lives and made so many sacrifices to give us the freedom we enjoy today. We should never forget what they did for us. Then the National Anthem is sung, while everybody stands to attention as a mark of respect.
At night, the Rashtrapati Bhavan is fully lit up and there is a firework show. Republic Day is indeed a day to unitedly stand together, for we are all a part of this beautiful motherland.
