The Evolution of Cinema
The Cinema came to India at the turn of this century. First, films had no sound. The Raj brought Cinematography to India in 1896 and in 9001 we were making our own films. India at present produces the largest number of movies every year. ‘Alam Ara’ was the first Indian talkie released in 1931. One of the earliest documentaries shot “The Return of the Wrangler Parajpe”, the celebration of a Maharashtrian who had secured a top degree in Mathematics at Cambridge. Then through the 20s and 30s to the 90s, we have moved through social films, romance, entertainment, sex, and violence. From small screen films we have progressed to 70 mm., 3D (Three dimensional and Surround sound’ screen films. The films have a great impact on the tastes and attitudes of the masses. The cinema is the most popular means of entertainment in our country. The invention and popularity of Television have been affecting the film industry badly. But in spite of that cinema has not lost its importance.
