Invitation to Diwali Celebrations
Ahmedabad
Dt.
Dear Joseph,
Diwali is not far off and already our colony resounds with crackers in the night. I am so excited that I’ve already exhausted my stock of ‘anars’, ‘dhani’ and other big bombs. If there were a terrorist, I could blow him up. A rich uncle of mine is contributing 500 rupees for our Diwali crackers and sweets this time. It’s going to be great fun. Could you come and join the fun, Joseph? Please do.
Your loving friend,
Bhanu.

Dear Bhanu,
My mouth waters at the mention of sweets for Diwali and my heart aches to take part in the noise of crackers. I’m trying my best to coax Mummy into allowing me to go to your place. As is natural, she is afraid of my antics and my getting injured. But she is relenting and soon will agree to send me accompanied by a strict escort— probably with Chain Singh, our pot-bellied servant.
So keep your fingers crossed and wait.
Yours lovingly,
Joseph.
