Dear mother,
I know that you are not happy with my report cards and failures in school tests. I sincerely apologize to you for proving a disappointment to you.
I promise that I will work hard and show marked improvement in future tests and exams. Infect, my failures were not due to negligence. It took time for me to get acclimatized to this place and hostel life which was totally a new experience for me. I used to feel sick and out of depth most of the time. I ran a light fever for several weeks. The school doctor told me that some plains people go through that experience. I did not write to you about it to save you from your worries.
I am again in command of myself and feel at home in the hostel. Now back to the studies I am, all set to recover the lost ground. By the time the father returns from England, you will be getting good report cards. I will not put you in embarrassment. Give my love to Pinky.

My dear Rahul,
I read your letter and learned about the problems you have been facing. It is good that you have got over the crisis, Don’t feel guilty for your temporary setbacks in examinations.
My dear child, I was never unhappy with you. A little worried over the examination results, I was. I know that you are a good boy and brilliant in your studies. Of course, something had been upsetting you which I suspected. It does take time to get set in new surroundings. And you had gone away from home for the first time. Even for me, it was an unsettling experience, not having you near me. In that state, I too messed up my cooking many a time. Now we two have resolved our crisis.
Study well and concentrate on your books. You will recover lost ground and do us proud in forthcoming examinations. Forget the past and look to the future. Child, living in a hostel is an important part of education. It makes a man out of a boy. It develops character, teaches a student to take his own decisions, tackles problems, and build up self-confidence. Take it as a golden opportunity. Take care of your health and diet.
