Write a letter to the Editor of a newspaper stating your views on strikes and bandhs.

The Editor,
The Statesman,

Sir,
Strikes and bandhs in our country have become a matter of routine with everybody, the students, the Government servants, the rickshaw pullers, and the like. Even a minor grievance is tried to be solved through gheraos, slogans, strikes, and bandhs. Defying the authorities has become the fashion of the day. Under one pretext of the other, there are strikes and bandhs which cause an unimaginable inconvenience to the general public.
The strikes, in most cases, become violent with the result that the police have to disperse them either by lathe charge or tear gas. Then the cries of ‘Enquiries’ start. A large amount of public money is thus wasted with ultimately no solid results. I am not against strikes and bandhs as such. For, people must have their democratic rights to protest against the injustice of the government of any other authority. But, strikes and bandhs I suppose are the extreme forms of this kind of protest. And that is why these two weapons must be used with great discretion. But our political leader’s resort to them on the slightest and most insignificant pretexts. And then almost every strike or bandh in this state is accompanied by acts of senseless violence.
I request you to please devote some space in your editorial columns condemning all these strikes and bandhs. You will be doing a great service to the nation.
Yours faithfully,
Vimal Jalan
