Who were the publishers of the first newspapers in the world?

first NEWSPAPERS

The first NEWSPAPERS in the sense of printed journals of news appearing at frequent intervals under the same imprint were two German publications that began life more or less simultaneously in the middle of January 1609.

Aviso Relation oder Zeitung was published weekly, commencing 15 January. Recently it has been proved beyond doubt that the paper was published at Wolfenbuttel in Lower Saxony, and it is now believed that the printer and publisher was Julius Adolph von Sohne, Keeper of the Royal Press. The Aviso continued to be issued until 1616, when there was a gap of for years before it was restarted by Elias Holwein. It was still in existence in 1624, but no copies are known after that date.

The other paper, Relation: Aller Furnemmen and Gedenckivurdigen Historien, was published weekly at Strasbourg, numbered but not dated. The publisher was Johann Carolus and the paper lasted until at least 1622. The 37th number, issued in September 1609, contains a report of Galileo’s telescope.
