Who patented collapsible tubes for commercial packing?
The first COLLAPSIBLE TUBE was patented by American artist John Rand on I 1 September 1841 and first used commercially by the Devoe & Reynolds Co. for packing oil-paints. In Britain, Rand’s lead tubes were adopted by most of the London artists’ colour-men soon afterwards.
The first Toothpaste Tube (Collapsible Metal) was introduced in Britain in 1891 for Dr Zierner’s Alexandra Dentifices, which retailed at 1 s-2 s 6 d each. Toothpaste was formerly packed in round Staffordshire ware pots.
The first Collapsible Polythene Tube was made by the Bradley Container Corp. of Delaware in 1953 for Sea and Ski, a skin-tanning lotion.
