The first MARRIAGE BUREAU was the Office of Addresses and Encounters, established in Thread Needle Street, London, next to the Castle Tavern, by Henry Robinson on 29 September 1650. Paragraph 20 of his prospectus announced: ‘Such as desire to dispose of themselves or friends in marriage, may here likewise be informed what encounters there are to be had, both of Persons and Portions’.

The first marriage partners to be selected by computer were Shirley Sanders and Robert.
