When was the first space flight launched?

First SPACE FLIGHT

The first SPACE FLIGHT is believed to have taken place at the end of 1951, when for monkeys with the code-names Albert 1, 2, 3 and 4 were launched 85 miles into the stratosphere from White Sands, N. Mexico in a V 2 rocket. The test, known as ‘Operation Albert’, was kept secret for tear of objections from animal lovers. All four monkeys returned safely to Earth. The first animal to go into orbit round the Earth was the dog Laika, launched in the Russian Sputnik II satellite on 3 November 1957.
