The first CASSETTE TAPE RECORDER was introduced in the USA by RCA Victor in June 1958 together with a selection of pre-recorded musical cassettes.
In Britain cassette tape recorder was produced by Garrad of Swindon in November 1959. The cassettes, for home recording, contained two 4 in spools of 4 in tape, with a playing time of 23 minutes. The ‘compact cassette’, which established the present standard with a tape width of 3.8 mm, was developed by Philips and launched in the UK in June 1964. Philips also marketed Britain’s first pre-recorded cassettes.
