When did the first Trans-Atlantic airline services commence from the US and from the UK?
The first TRANS-ATLANTIC AIRLINE SERVICE across the North Atlantic began with the inaugural passenger flight of Pan American Airways’ Boeing 314 flying-boat Yankee Clipper between Botwood, Newfoundland and Southampton in 18 hr 42 min on 27-28 June 1939. Her 19 passengers enjoyed a standard on accommodation that has not been surpassed since on scheduled air-routes. The aircraft had separate passenger cabins, a dining-saloon, ladies’ dressing-room, recreation lounge, sleeping-berths and a bridal suite. The fare was £140 return.
The first commercial North Atlantic passenger service by a British airline was flown by BOAC Lockheed Constellations from London to New York commencing 1 July 1946. Scheduled flying time was 19 hr 45 min.
