The Puppy
Joyce skipped and hummed all the way to the pet shop. The coins jingled about in her pocket. She could not wait to buy a new toy for her puppy.
When she reached the pet shop, there was a commotion at the back. Joyce was curious. She walked hurriedly to where everyone was standing. Joyce elbowed her way to the front of the crowd and saw a puppy under a shelf. It had squeezed its way in when its cage door was open. Just then, Joyce had an idea. She took the toy that she wanted to buy and ripped it away from the plastic bag. Bending as low as she could, she peered into the dark hole under the shelf and pushed the bone in as far as she could. She was delighted when the puppy used its paw to reach for the bone. Joyce pulled out the bone slowly and the puppy emerged from under the shelf with its paw on the bone.
Everyone clapped when they saw the puppy. One of the workers took over and carried the puppy into its cage. Joyce was glad that the ordeal was over. To thank her for her help, the manager of the shop gave her the bone and also a packet of dog food for her puppy.
