The False Burglar
One day, as I was walking home from school, I noticed a man climbing into a building. He used a ladder to reach an open window. Thinking that he must be a burglar, Iran to the nearest telephone booth and informed the police about what I had seen.
A few minutes later, a police car arrived at the scene. I ran up to the policemen and showed them the house where the burglar had entered. The policemen surrounded the building and the sergeant who was in charge called out to the thief to give himself up.
The sergeant used a loudspeaker to repeat his warning to the burglar. Soon a man, looking rather confused, looked out of the window and asked what the commotion was all about. He introduced himself as the owner of the house. Then, he opened the front gate and invited the policemen into his house. After a brief investigation, the policemen learnt that he used the ladder to enter his house as he had misplaced his keys.
I felt very embarrassed and apologized to the man. However, the owner and the policemen praised me for being civic-minded.
