A Hard Life
“Try our delicious hot dogs! Only eighty cents!” Peter yelled at the top of his voice. He was selling hot dogs with his grandmother along the pavement just next to the bus stop.
It was hard work as not many people wanted to buy the hot dogs. Most of them were in a hurry to get to work or get home. No one even looked at Peter. After calling out the whole morning, Peter only managed to sell three hot dogs. The money earned was not even enough for lunch. Peter and his grandmother lived from hand to mouth. Peter’s parents had passed away in an accident. His grandmother had been taking care of him since then. Peter did not have money for the latest PSP games that his friends had. He did not even have cable television. He was glad to be able to earn enough for food every day. After helping his grandmother at the stall in the morning, he would go to school. In the evening, he would return to help her.
When night fell, a few office workers stopped to buy the hot dogs on their way home. Peter and his grandmother finally sold their last hot dog at eleven o’clock. After packing up, they covered their cart and walked home.
