A Good Deed
Mrs. Thomas carried Brendan onto the crowded train. It was peak hour and the train was packed. She carried Brendan with one hand and held on to the grab pole with another. She swayed about unsteadily when the train moved off.
Just then, the train jerked to a stop and Mrs. Thomas almost fell backward. She gripped Brendan to stop him from falling. Brendan started wailing. Mrs. Thomas tried her best to keep him quiet. Everyone was staring at them. Just then, she felt a light tap on her shoulder. A young boy had stood up from his seat and he offered it to her. Mrs. Thomas smiled with relief. Thanking the boy, she squeezed past another passenger before getting to the seat. However, she was about to sit down when a lady pushed her away roughly. She put several big plastic bags on the empty seat. She then folded her arms and stared ahead smugly, ignoring Mrs. Thomas. Another man sitting nearby reprimanded the lady. Soon, the passengers around joined in as well. The lady looked around uncomfortably and hurriedly took her bags away
Mrs. Thomas was glad when she was finally able to get a seat. She smiled gratefully at the young boy and the other passengers who had stood up for her.
