Traffic Management
In cities and towns, traffic jam in many busy localities is a common sight to see. In metropolitan cities, traffic jam causes much hardship to the students, old, women as well as the office-goers. The buses, trucks, cars, motorbikes and even bicycles have to proceed controlling their speed now and then and stopping at the traffic signal points for a few minutes.
In the advanced and developed countries, there is the lane system. Vehicles like cars, motorbikes, school buses and public transport buses, strictly follow the lane system. Vehicles go one after another steadily and they go at a particular speed. At the turns, the cars, motorbikes and buses, stop automatically, even if no vehicle or person is in their way. The vehicle drivers see to it that the traffic rules are not violated.
In India, vehicles do not follow one another. They stop side by side and each vehicle tries to overtake the other to reach its destination first. In India, one finds many types of vehicles like cars, small vans, big vans, public transport buses, water supply lorries, motorbikes, lorries carrying goods, cycle-rickshaws, auto rickshaws, cycles and bullock-carts. In case of a railway crossing, vehicles stop until the railway gate is opened. When it is opened, vehicles try to overtake one another and soon there is a heavy traffic.
The traffic management system is not so satisfactory in the crowded cities of India. It seems that the types of vehicles that should run on the road have been restricted to other countries only to make ‘traffic management easy. There is traffic jam when small and big vehicles run side by side and do not follow one another. In western countries, the cattle are not allowed on the road. The drivers are aware that one vehicle overtaking another can sometimes be the cause of an accident.
If a vehicle overtakes another on a narrow bridge, there is every chance of an accident. Most of the time vehicles coming from the opposite directions travel at a terrible speed. The gap between them may be just a foot and any mistake in driving may result in an accident.
There should be a middling all along the national highway. This can help the vehicles coming in the opposite directions to avoid collusion with one another. This kind of collision between vehicles is a frequent occurrence in India and this should be avoided by taking certain steps. Firstly, all the traffic rules should be strictly observed by all the drivers. There should be the lane system where vehicles can move following one another. The auto-rickshaw drivers should not drive in between vehicles with the idea of overtaking them. Buses and trucks should be driven within-a specific speed limit and with more caution. At turns, more care should be taken. Safety and attentiveness should be the prime concern of all the drivers. Moreover, the drivers of the vehicles who violate the traffic rules should be severely punished.
