India got Independence on the 15th of August, 1947 from British rule. This day is celebrated with great pride and joy in every corner of the country. Moreover Indian Consulates and Embassies all over the world celebrate it with great pomp and ceremony. The capital of the country New Delhi celebrates this occasion on a very grand scale. On this day the Prime Minister of this country unfurls the National Tricolour from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort. He then addresses the nation and calls upon the people to work unitedly for the betterment of Indian society. The grateful nation pays homage to all those who had laid down their lives for the freedom of this country. Many social welfare schemes and programs are launched on this day. The Government announces many policy decisions, regarding various matters of the country. Schools and other educational institutions organize functions and sports meet to mark this occasion. All the State Capitals of the country hold parades and cultural festivals to celebrate this day, Radio Stations and Newspapers carry excerpts of famous speeches by our great leaders. This inspires us to work for the development of our nation.

At night, the Parliament House, the Red Fort, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan are illuminated with electric bulbs. The entire city looks beautiful. Independence Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Many people gather in the early morning in the airy grounds of Red Fort to see the function. Throughout the country, this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Whereas in the states, Chief Ministers unfurl the flags in their capitals and distribute sweets. A National Anthem is sung after the flag hoisting ceremony.
