The Golden Temple
The Golden Temple is located in Amritsar. Sacred to the Sikhs, it stands in the centre of the city.
In fact, it is said that the temple is the heart of the city. Around the temple is a big water tank, containing water clear as crystal. This tank was excavated by Guru Ram Dasji in the year 1589. On all four sides of the tank runs a broad path with beautiful marble tiles.
A marble passage leads to the main temple. The walls of the temple are made of marble, and have beautiful floral decorations. They are inlaid with precious stones. But the most beautiful feature of all is the golden dome.
The temple is open to people of all castes and creeds. Food is served to everyone, and all are treated equally.
Thousands of devotees visit the temple daily to pray. Recitations from the Guru Granth Sahib are read throughout the day. On Diwali night and other religious festivals, the temple is lit, and it looks breathtakingly beautiful.
When the devotees’ prayers are answered, they give their thanks and offer money, jewellery and food in gratitude. On Guru Purab, jewellery and old arms are displayed, and there are fireworks as well. The temple has sufficient funds and trusts have been set up by the Sikh families to help the poor and needy.
