Books are called ‘Kings’ Treasures’. Treasures filled not with gold and silver but with riches more valuable than these—knowledge, noble thoughts and high ideals. Poor is the man who does not read. Picnic, tours, gossips, back-biting, teasing do give us pleasure but reading of books gives us special pleasure which these items can’t give.
Reading is of different kinds—light reading; reading of newspapers, magazines, periodicals, journals, books on travel and adventure, etc. it helps us to escape from dull and drab realities of life. While reading stories reader identifies himself or herself with the characters. This identification is a source of pleasure. Then there are books of serious reading. They embrace work of literature, history, philosophy, etc. they are ever green books. They contain the best experiences and thoughts. They ennoble us and transform our lives.
Books are our best companions. Loneliness is no trouble for a reader. If we are cheerful and read books, our cheerfulness gets doubled. If we are depressed books console and soothe our troubled mind. They are balm to our bleeding heart. They can give us clues to get out of the knotty problems of life.
Books teach us to love virtue and hate sin. They give us sound moral advice. They have the capacity to convert a rascal into a virtuous and righteous fellow.
The service book render depends of their quality. This means we should be extra careful in the choice of books. Bad books that romanticize evil deeds ruin the life of the readers. Good books purify and mould our character. Impressionable minds must take the advice of experienced hands to make right choice of books reading of good books makes a full man but cheap books, not in cost but in contents must not be read. They can satiate senses but pervert mind and heart.
Intelligent decision is necessary to get maximum out of books. Some books are to be tasted, others are to be swallowed, some are to be chewed and digested.
People may say books in themselves are neither good nor bad. But it is not right. Poison is poison. Good books bestow blessing and bad book bestow curses.
