Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628-58) in the loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is located on the side of the Yamuna River in Agra. More than 20,000 workers took part in building this wonder piece of architecture. Along with this many elephants and carts were used to bring the materials to the building site. In the main mausoleum, there are 28 precious stones engraved and there are 99 names of Allah carved in Mumtaz Mahal’s grave. Built out of white marble, almost 3.25 crore was spent on building it. For this architects were brought from Asia besides the local ones. The white marble was brought from Makrana in Rajasthan. The precious stones were brought from different parts of India besides Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Sikri. One can see it changing colours in a day. It is said that these different colours show the mood changes of a woman. On the day of the full moon, it looks very elegant and unique. In 1983, it was declared a World Heritage Site and millions of people come to visit it daily.
