Overweight and obesity are man-made demons.

Some people tend to be overweight because of their high calorie diet and lack of physical exercise and activities. Obesity is a disease like any other disease. So, there is a hope that it can be controlled or cured. Obesity is defined as an excess amount of body weight that includes muscles, bones, fat and water. For a common man it is an excess amount of body fat. Obesity occurs when equilibrium between calories consumed and calories burnt is tilted. Its cause can be genetic. Environmental factors are also responsible. Lifestyle behaviours play a major role to precipitate this disease of obesity. There are psychological factors also. Negative emotions respond to people who overeat. Binge eating is also a culprit. It is where people gulp down excessively thinking they cannot help it, they cannot control it. Low self esteem also urges man to eat more and more just to show off that he is not less than anybody else. Obesity is a health hazard. Many serious medical conditions are linked to it, including type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Gall bladder disease and gallstones, liver disease and deterioration of joints are also caused by obesity. More than physical disease it is mental disease. Obesity makes a man feel that he is unwanted and he is always in the way of others; interviews he cannot face; girls do not prefer his company. So much so he fears public appearance. Exercise is the sworn foe of obesity. It makes dents on weight and increases fitness and flexibility and improves skin texture. It also minimizes harmful side effects of crash-dieting, slimming capsules and the heat treatment. Let us adopt the slogan—Down with obesity’ as it is not good in any way.
