I watched the Pepsi Asia Cup cricket match played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Sharjah, on the television. It was a very thrilling and exciting match ever played on the soil of Sharjah. In this decisive match, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan with five wickets, to enter the finals of the fifth Asia Cup cricket tournament. The Pakistan team fell into the clever trap laid by Arjuna Ranatunga, the captain of the Sri Lankan team. They were restricted to mere 178 runs in the assigned 50 overs, by the quick bowling and excellent fielding of the Sri Lankans. The most successful player of the day was Ramesh Kaluwitherna, who had a field day with five dismissals. His wicket-keeping was of very high standards. It was a perfect example of alertness and agility. The Sri Lankan side opened their scorecard with some scintillating display of batsmanship by Jayasuriya. After his dismissal, Mahanamma continued to score runs in a more sedate manner. Sri Lanka’s innings were augmented by aggressive batting from Gurusingha, Aravinda de Silva, and Kaluwitharana. Skipper Ranatunga remained unbeaten with 23. The winning run was scored by left-hander Tilakaratane, who hit the off-spinner Arshad Khan over deep mid-wicket for six. In short, Sri Lankans inflicted a comprehensive five-wicket defeat on the much-fancied Pakistan players.

We come across two forms of cricket. One is a test match which goes on for five days, and the second one is the One Day Match which is a one-day affair. We hardly see a one-day match ending in a draw. This makes it more interesting. In 1983, India won the World Cup in one day cricket. At present, the Indian cricket team is one of the best team in the world. The team is in great form. This game has become very popular in our country.
