Exploitation of Women
Nearly half of the world’s population is female, yet nearly all the wealth and power of the world is concentrated in the hands of men. This is an unfortunate fact of our society today. The status of a woman has been gradually eroded and she has been relegated to live a life of drudgery behind the four walls of her house. Over the centuries various legal and illegal socio-religious sanctions have forced her to bear the indignities, like rape, child marriage, physical abuse, etc. heaped on her by society. She has been used and abused by the society at large and her family in particular. Denied of basic human rights like the right of education, health, and expression, her position in the socie y is that of a mute animal tied to a post in the house. The spread of awareness and education has done little to eradicate her second-class status. It has however been noticed that the financial empowerment of women has gone a long way in improving their social standing. This has made them more assertive and aware of their rights, This has also given them the courage to fight various injustices of the society. Unfortunately spread of such empowerment is slow. It will be a long time before women are free from the exploitative folk of the society.
