Co-education and Its Advantages
Co-education is that system of education in which the boys and girls study together in a common school or college. Co-education was not prevalent in ancient India. It is a new idea. After India became independent, a great awareness came amongst the people about education. The parents supported the case for adequate education to the children irrespective of their sex. The countrymen realized that the boys and girls have to move together and shoulder to shoulder in every walk of life in free India. They started educating their children in co-educational institutions.
Co-education has numerous advantages. It is helpful in generating a feeling of unity and sense of equal responsibility amongst boys and girls. When young boys and girls come closer to each other, they take more care in understanding each other. That helps in creating friendly atmosphere between the two. The boys and the girls enjoy their joint activities everyday in schools and colleges.
Co-education is very economical. The number of schools required are less. The strength of teaching staff is reduced. The government spends less money on the infrastructures and laboratories. The balance money so saved is spent for better maintenance of schools and colleges, which facilitates the students for better study.
Co-education helps in bringing change in the society according to the need of modern time. Young boys and girls get opportunity to mix with each other frankly and conveniently. They act jointly on various occasions and events in the society. They demonstrate the examples of co-operation before the people, which inspires and generates a healthy spirit of working among the masses.
The boys and the girls come in to close contact of each other in such institutions very often. They know the characteristic qualities of all the fellows of their class. There are cases where the boys and the girls feel comfortable in choosing life-partners of their choice. Such marriages are mostly successful. The co-educational institutions have become genetic platforms in the society for selection of life-partners.
That solves the problem of many parents about the marriage of their children. It is seen that such marriages last long because of better understanding between the two. It also helps in reducing injustice and crimes against women which are created by demanding dowry in marriages.
Co-education produces good citizens who possess enough quality and maturity in them. That is because of gaining a number of experiences of good and bad nature during their student life in co-educational institutions. This kind of quality in a person distinguishes him honourably during his further course of life. Such citizens are mostly successful in their working because of their characteristic potentiality and maturity.
Ours is a male dominated society. There is a feeling of inferiority amongst women. There is a necessity to educate the public opinion that the rights of women and of men are equal, that they have equal role to play in the society. Their aim and interest is one, and both the men and the women possess equal ability to act. The aim should be to remove the feeling of inferiority complex and bringing oneness between the two. That will generate confidence in female community and will give a great working strength to the country. Co-education is the only answer to this problem. When the boys and the girls live and study together for a long time, the disparity of gender goes off and the feeling of equality is seen apparently among them. By virtue of this development both the boys and the girls accelerate the working with their equal and joint efforts during their life and achieve the goal more easily.
There are many co-educational institutions, convent and public schools, where boys and girls are studying together. They are showing good performance through their joint efforts not only in studies, but also in sports, social, cultural and other extra-curricular activities, which are held in schools and colleges. It is helpful for personality development of boys and girls. It also helps in building, a decent and civilized society.
Co-education generates the climate of competition among boys and girls through the activities which they carry out in the schools. That is the reason why the students of co-educational institutions do better in every walk of their life.

We can bring an atmosphere of unity among the men and the women only when we determine to establish maximum number of co-educational institutions in the country. If we want that India should shine, we have to bring the boys and the girls together for creating a force of working hands in the country, which can give an effective response for excellence by speeding up the progress in all the fields.
In a democratic country, like India, women are equally useful and can work shoulder to shoulder with men. We cannot ignore the t importance of women in the present circumstances. In fact, we need to give equal responsibility to women for taking India ahead smoothly, and making its dream of becoming world power come true. We need to develop both the categories in an equal manner, for which the co-educational system is the best one. All the countrymen are to be educated to follow co-education for better education, wide ranging development and bright future of their own and of the country as well.
