Career Choice
Only a few decades ago there were limited job opportunities. Then one could not imagine the kind of vast, job opportunities today’s educated young people have to choose from. The job market has expanded at an incredible rate. So many new fields have opened up offering attractive salaries or incomes.
The choices are so diverse that a young person gets confused. He or she needs the guidance of some counselor. Gone are the days when choosing a career was no problem. A son could just adopt the profession of his father. The professional knowledge of a grandfather was Valid for his grandson as well. But today the things are different. We live in a fast changing world where technology becomes obsolete and situations change dramatically in no time. What we had learnt a few years ago becomes irrelevant today. One has to keep learning all the time. An I Indian graduates like a rolling stone gathering no moss if he has not made correct choice or failed to upgrade his knowledge. Such persons go on drifting from one profession to another without any definite aim or goal. The choice of career at the very start is not easy. It is a vital decision on which a young person’s entire future, prosperity and happiness depends. A wrong choice can ruin one’s life.
Hence, career choosing requires deep thought, correct evaluation of one’s skills or potential and ambition. For an intelligent and industrious person there are many options open. One should be clear about his goal of life. The chosen career must be in line with your taste and temperament. Give a thought to your preferences to the fields of Administrative Services, Armed forces, IT industry, Science, Engineering, Medical Services, Business, Management, Teaching, Mass-Media, Fashions, Law, Acting, Sports etc.
If I were to choose my career, I won’t prefer Administrative Service. I won’t like to play second fiddle to semi-literate ministers. Business-is not in my blood. Then money is not everything in life. Law takes too much lying. Someone has aptly said that lawyers are liars. I can’t tell lies. There is no harm in becoming a doctor. But I don’t think that I have that kind of skill or taste. Engineering is too mechanical. Politics is not for one who appreciates honesty in life. I won’t opt for defence services even. It involves too much violence and bloodshed which I detest. I don’t like my life to be like a drill. Becoming an IT professional also does not attract me although all my friends are going for it. I can’t sell myself for a high salary.
I want a different kind of purpose in my life. After a lot of thinking I have decided to become a teacher. I won’t mind going to a rural area to serve as a school teacher. My grandfather was a freedom fighter-who wished to become a school teacher but could not. Imparting education to the children of a backward area sounds a noble mission to me. I have no desire to become a rich man. I wish for a simple and honest life away from the madness of the big cities.
