A Skyscraper
A skyscraper is an extremely tall, many-storeyed building, Cities like Bombay, Delhi, New York, Washington, etc. have many such buildings. The word skyscraper means that which touches the sky’. Some of these buildings have as many as a hundred or more floors. The tallest building in the world is that of the World Trade Centre in New York. Each of these buildings is a slender and stately structure. They soar into the sky and appear as if they were talking to the clouds above. These buildings are small towns in themselves. They house large departmental stores, office complexes, chambers of Doctors, banks, clubs, swimming pools, restaurants, jogging paths, tennis courts. One of the most famous buildings in the world is the Empire State Building. Its height is more than 246 meters. It stands on an area of 8100 squire meters. More than 20,000 people work in this 102 story building. It is visited every day by more than 1500 people. It looks very majestic when the setting sun is reflected in the glass panes of its 6400 windows. The advantage of such high-rise buildings is that they are capable of providing many-faceted services inside a small area especially in big cities where land is not available or is very expensive However disadvantages are many. They are vulnerable to terrorist attacks like the one on the World Trade Centre or fire accidents.
