Sun Temple
The Sun Temple at Martand in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is one of the few ancient Buddhist and Hindu architectural heritage. This temple is a classic example of local stone architecture, reflecting influences from Gandharan art and indigenous wooden prototypes.
It was built in the seventh century, by King Lalitaditya Mukhtapida. The ruins of the Martand temple, are located in a beautiful setting, against the backdrop of the hills on a high plateau overlooking the plains. The temple is surrounded by villages. Architecturally, the site is perceived as the best place for the construction of a monument. The massive proportion of the temple with colonnades and sculptured details is very impressive.
The Sun Temple also confirms the Grecian Classical structure. To protect from the heavy snowfall, a steeply sloping roof was constructed. The design of pillars and porches seems to be of Greece. However, the interior is decorated according to Hindu traditions.
