Sidi Saiyed Mosque
The Sidi Saiyed Mosque is perhaps the best-known monument in Ahmedabad. It is famous for its perforated windows and stone screen- work, although the identity of Sidi Saiyed is not clear.
The mosque, with its small stature and elegance in proportion and scale, is quite exquisite. The courtyard of the mosque has a pretty tank used for ritual cleansing before prayers. The outer walls of the western sides, have a delicate motif, much like those in the Jami Masjid. In the western prayer hall, the back wall is decorated with ten semi-circular skylight windows. Some of these are filled with square carved stone screens. The semi-circular window is fitted with one large piece of stone. The stone has been so finely cut, it resembles a lace. The design depicts a central tree with twirling branches full of blossoms and straight rigid palm trees that grow beside them. It is a perfect play of straight lines and curves, evergreens and transient blossoms, symbolic of all that is permanent and ever-changing in life.
