Hemkund Sahib
Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib is a sacred shrine. It is situated near Hemkund Lake. It is the place where Guru Gobind Singh unified with God. The guru described the place in his autobiography. Two devout Sikhs Sant Sohan Singh and Havaldar Mohan Singh later rediscovered it. Hemkund is also a Hindu pilgrimage site, referred to as Lokpal. A small Lakshman temple stands near the Gurudwara. Legend has it that Lakshman had done his penance at Hemkund.
Hemkund is near Govindghat. Govindghat is the gateway to the Lakshman Ganga Valley. The trek from Badrinath to Hemkund takes one through the forests of pine, amidst blooming wild roses, ferns, and alpine flowers. The Lakshman Ganga is also seen.
Hemkund Lake has a circumference of 2 km. The best season to visit Hemkund is between July and October. The shores of the lake are covered with mosses and flowers. Tourists in herds flock to Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib during the season. It is situated 4320 m above the sea level.
