Chini-Ka-Rauza
Chini-Ka-Rauza is located on the east bank of Yamuna River less than 1 kilometer north of Itimad-ud-Daulah’s tomb. The uniqueness of this monument is that it is profusely decorated in variegated schemes of colours due to which the monument is called as ‘Chini-Ka-Rauza’. The main tomb is square in plan with 79 feet side. The main chamber, octagonal in shape, measures the diameter of 27 feet 10 inches. The tomb is guarded by four square chambers erected at each corner. The attractive part of the structure is its shallow dome crowned by an inverted lotus.
The tomb was built in 1639 A.D. by Mulla Shukrullah Shirazi who was the Prime Minister of Shah Jahan. The most exquisite feature of this monument is its glazed tile decoration. Construction of Chhajja brackets and balconies are limited which provide enough space for glaze decoration. The spandrels of the arches are decorated with arabesque and fluoresce patterns, laid in blue and orange. The shafts on sides of the arches contain zig-zag designs in crimson, orange and white colours.
