Honesty

Pansy was on her way home after school. She was thinking of what to buy for lunch as she was feeling very hungry.

As she was passing through the park, she saw a wallet lying on the ground. She picked it up and opened to check if there were any documents of identification but unfortunately, there were none. However, there were three fifty-dollar notes in the wallet.

Pansy thought for a while about how to return the wallet to the rightful owner when her friend, Linda, came along. Linda asked her what had happened and why she was standing in the middle of a path, staring at a wallet.

Pansy shared with her what had happened. The moment Linda heard about the money, her eyes widened and she rubbed her hands in glee. She asked Pansy what she was going to do and Pansy said that she wanted to return it to the owner.

Linda told her that there was no way to locate the owner since there were no identification documents in the wallet. Linda added that with the sum of money, they could have a great meal at the fast-food restaurant nearby. Pansy loved to have a meal at the fast-food restaurant but she also remembered what her form teacher had always told them.

“Honesty is the best policy.”

Pansy knew that the owner of the wallet would definitely be very worried so she made up her mind to send the wallet to the police station nearby. She told Linda that it would not be right to take what did not belong to them. Linda realised her mistake too. She volunteered to accompany Pansy to the police station.

When they arrived at the police station, Pansy handed the wallet to the police officer on duty. The police officer took down her details and then praised her for being so honest. Pansy felt very proud of herself.
