The Value of Sports
‘A sound mind in a sound body’. This is a truth which is universally- acknowledged and–accepted. Physical well-being is essential for a happy and a successful life. A healthy person is less prone to lack of confidence and melancholy. What better way of acquiring good health than games and sports?
The most obvious advantage that stems from sports therefore, is physical fitness. If one is physically fit, one feels capable of hard work. Sport combines exercise with thrill and excitement. All forms of sports, hockey, football, cricket, badminton, rowing, swimming, paragliding—entertain as well as provide the much-needed exercise. Martial arts go a step further—they Improve concentration and inculcate discipline as well. Any form of sport has unexpected twists and turns, for both the participants and spectators.
All forms of sports require physical vigour and nurture dexterity, for they require a certain skill to play. Further, they are an excellent way of spending one’s leisure time. They nurture the spirit of sportsmanship, a sense of fair play and teamwork. They cultivate confidence, operation and teach one how to take defeat in one’s stride. When sportsman acquires these qualities on the play field exhibits them in real life as well.
Sports develop and encourage the spirit of competition. They increase stamina, toughness, and endurance. They encourage a healthy spirit of rivalry and competition and constantly lead to improvement in performance and a desire to better one’s previous performance.
Games and sports are an inseparable part of one’s education. They teach one the value of unity and the necessity of obeying the orders of the captain or the leader. It’s high time games and sports were made an inseparable part of the school and college environment.
