The Computer Age in India
The computer, in its simplest form, is an electronic device that stores data, analyses, produces information as required and does complicated mathematical calculations in no time at all. There are mainly two types of computer—the analog arid the digital. The analog computer operates on data represented by variable, physical quantities such as voltages, and measures continuously. By contrast the digital computer works with numbers, words and symbols, expressed as digits, which it manipulates and counts discreetly. The third general class of computer is the hybrid computer, which Combines the features of the other two.
It was during the time of Rajiv Gandhi, in the early eighties, that computer came to India in a big way. He showed great interest in improving computers to assist engineers, technicians, clerical staff and others in their day-to-day work. He envisaged very clearly, the advantages computer had, over human hands, in terms of saving time and energy and concentrated efforts were made to train computer professionals including programmers system analysts, marketing experts and management personnel’s.
Working with a computer- requires total concentration, or else access remains an impossible dream. What is essential in computer training is the ability to analyze things clearly and put them down efficiently. To do this one must know the computer language thoroughly. Once proficiency in programming is achieved, half the battle is won. One can shift to higher level of system rand designing becomes easy.
The field of designing is the most challenging for the programmer. It demands Sustained application and total commitment. Consultancy can prove a successful career if an individual’ can independently analyze and design software.
A great demand is seen in the field of computers, which have become so integral to our lives, be it in business, government offices, schools, colleges and in every department of activity. Soon computers will become indispensable and every individual will need to be computer-savvy to do any day-to-day transaction.
