Sorry No Dowry
The dowry system in our country is like a cancerous growth, destroying the very fabric of our society. Starting off with the best of intentions, it has now degenerated into a money-making scheme, making contemptible both the giver and the taker of dowry.
The dowry system is an old one, but in ancient times it was a way of helping out the newly-wedded couple and ensuring some kind of economic security for the girl. The bride’s parents gave in the form of gifts whatever they could comfortably give. Now, however, regardless of the financial position of a girl’s family, unreasonable demands are made. If they are not met, the girl is humiliated, harassed and tortured. The better placed the boy, the higher his price in the marriage market!
It is high time we got rid of this evil practice of dowry. Each one of us should take a stand in this regard. Boys should refuse to take dowry and girls should firmly say ‘no’ to greedy bridegrooms. The slogan for the day should be “Sorry —No Dowry!”
