By whom was the first black board made?
The first BLACKBOARD was made in 1814 from a square of beech wood stained black by James Pillans, an usher at Edinburgh High School, so that he could draw maps which were not crowded with detail. The hills were drawn in green chalk, rivers in light blue, towns in pink and battles and sieges were denoted in red. As coloured chalks did not exist, Pillans made his own by grinding up chalk, adding dye and binding the power together with porridge.
