Essay No. 01

A rickshaw is a cheap means of transport. Rickshaws can be commonly seen in small towns and villages. A rickshaw is a source of earning for many people. Some have their own rickshaw and some have it on a daily rent. Some ply it during daytime and some at night.

Rickshaw pullers are seen at the railway stations, bus stands, cinema houses, and busy centres. A rickshaw puller plies his rickshaw in all sorts of weather. Rain or shine, winter or summer, he plies his rickshaw without complaining. He knows no rest, no holiday. His earning at the end of the day is very small. It is just enough to keep his body and soul together.

A rickshaw-puller is illiterate. He is poorly dressed. He looks rough and tough. He does not have refined manners. He uses abusive language. He does not mind quarreling with the passengers. Sometimes he even comes to blow also. But all the rickshaw-pullers are not alike. Some are gentle and soft-spoken. They do not bargain too much. They demand a genuine fare. One feels like giving them more than they ask for.

The job of a rickshaw-puller is by no means an easy one. It is a hard task. It is greatly tiring. It requires physical strength. Most rickshaw-pullers look sad and miserable. The government should try to improve the lot of a rickshaw-puller. Rickshaws should be modernised. Some sort of machinery should be fixed in rickshaws so that a rickshaw puller may have to make a less use of legs. A rickshaw puller should be careful about his health. He should not waste his money on liquor.

A Rickshaw Puller

A rickshaw puller is a labourer. He has to work very hard. It is a pity that a man has to carry another man to earn his living.

A rickshaw puller leads a very hard life as he often has to provide for his whole family mostly living in villages. He works day and night in all kinds of weather. His work starts early in the morning, where he can be seen at the street corner, waiting for the passengers be it a chilly winter, or a scorching summer.

He always tries to fetch as many passengers in a trip as he can because it earns him more fare. Sometimes he can also be seen carrying fruits, vegetables, etc. He also carries children to schools, which earns him extra income and he passes his time pleasantly too with the children.

He has to pull his rickshaw on all types of roads be it rough, smooth, or muddy. Even when he is tired and out of breath, he ferries passengers from one place to another.

Some rickshaw pullers hire rickshaws and give their half of the day’s earning to the rickshaw owner but it does not mean that they cannot have their own rickshaws. In this regard, they are lucky as the Government has come to their help by advancing loans to them. But, there are some rickshaw pullers who ruin their lives by falling in bad company and by getting addicted to drugs.

Next time I see a rickshaw puller I’ll remember all the hard work he puts in.
