Value of Television
Television is popularly described as a wonder box. It has brought about a great change in man’s life. Today it has become a necessity for every family. It is an improvement on the radio. On the radio we can only hear the voice of the speaker. But on the television we cannot only hear but also see the person talking.
Television is a source of entertainment. It has brought the cinema and the stage in our drawing room. All the members can sit together and watch television programmes. Movies are shown on television screen. We can see various family serials. The people can watch national functions like the Republic Day function and the Independence function while sitting at home. Many national and international matches are also telecast for the public.
Television is a medium of education. Lessons on various subjects are telecast on television for the benefit of the students. We see and hear discussions on the burning topics of the day. During election days, the political leaders enlighten the people about their policies and programmes. On special days ceremonies, festivals and folk songs of different states are telecast. The people of various states come to understand each other.
Television is a means of advertisement. Big firms and companies give advertisements on television. These advertisements help promote their trade and create wide market for their goods. Some firms even sponsor serials and other programmes to popularize their products.
It is generally complained that the students waste much of their valuable time in watching television. They do so at the cost of their studies. Television has a bad effect on eye-sight also. Therefore television should be watched only sparingly.
