Who designed gym slip?
The first GYM SLIP
The first GYM SLIP was designed in October 1892 by Miss Margaret Tait, a student at Mme Bergman-Osterberg’s Hampstead Physical Training College, and first worn by her fellow student Anna Pagan, who wrote home in a letter, dated 25 October: Madame is wearing out my shoe-leather trotting me up and down the stairs to show my costume off, and the others are being altered. She wants it adopted in schools. A jersey and knickers, with a dress blouse, the jersey forming the yoke and sleeve.’
Undeservedly derided, the gym slip was an important factor in enabling girls to participate in team games, since prior to its introduction there had been no ‘acceptable’ costume that gave them the necessary freedom of movement.
