The first JET (TURBO) AIRLINE SERVICE was inaugurated by BOAC with the flight of a de Havilland Comet from London to Johannesburg (6,724 miles) in 23 hr 34 min on 2-3 May 1952.
The first jet services across the North Atlantic were flown between London and New York by BOAC Comet 4, G-APDC (pilot Capt. R.E. Millichap), and from New York to London by BOAC Comet 4,G-APDB (pilot Capt. T.B. Stoney), both on 4 October 1958. The NY-London run established a new Atlantic record of 6 hr 11 min. The fare was £ 279 15 s.
