Sir,
Yesterday I read an article in your newspaper about the ruthless killing of animals for the sake of their fur, horns, ivory, musk and skin. Human beings spend vast amounts of money to improve their appearance. But surely men and women can adorn themselves without having to slaughter the beautiful animals of the world. A woolen coat is as warm as fur, plant extracts make better cosmetics and perfumes than animal fat and musk and marble and mental carvings are as beautiful as those made of ivory. Killing animals, then, is not a necessity but only serves human vanity.
Mankind must realize the inhumanity of his deeds. What right has he to kill an animal only because he wants its fur or horns? By that reasoning, any person can kill me if he wants my car or my house. But even more important than the immorality of such cruelty is the ecological destruction caused by this senseless killing. In the last 50 years many species have become extinct or been classified as endangered, i.e., in danger of being exterminated by man.
A time may soon come when zoos are the only place where these animals will be seen.
It is imperative for the government to ban shooting of birds and animals and impose heavy penalties on the offenders. And every individual should resolve to help the government by shunning goods made by killing animals. That is the only way to preserve the wildlife that still remains on earth.
Yours truly,
Karan
