Indian Middle Class Society
Indian society is divided into three classes. On the top are the rich. They are the people who have got everything in plenty. Their standard of living is high. They are in dominating position every-where. They have the upper hand in industrial and economic circle, of the country. They can influence commercial organisations, film industries, national and international sports and Indian politics. At the bottom are the poor. Most of the poor people are below poverty line. Many of them are facing acute financial hardship. Some people have no house to live in. Many of them are spending their nights on the footpath. These people are hardly getting meals for two times. They are generally doing labour work. These people are illiterate in majority. Some of them are suffering from starvation. Their major occupation is agriculture which they are doing with old methods and wooden plough. They are depending on monsoon. They are earning little money out of it, which is insufficient to meet their essential requirements. Their children are deprived of education due to poverty. These hungry children generally follow their parents in adopting labour work. There is a middle class between the top and the bottom. They are further divided into two groups. One is higher middle and another is lower middle class. Higher middle class has a good income. They are either businessmen of higher salaried class people. They are very few in comparison with lower middle class. The majority is of lower middle class in India. They are just managing the requirement of their families. They are neither rich nor poor. Their condition is slightly better than that of the poor people. They are at least having small houses to live in. They are mostly salaried class people. In certain cases, both husband and wife are working and earning a good money. Their financial position is better and they are maintaining good standard of living. These couples are able to afford required money for better education of their children. People of lower middle class are generally educated and are conscious for the education of their children. They proceed with planned expenditure being fixedand limited income.. However, they have the compulsion for maintaining themselves outwardly in a be fitting manner.
The middle class in India is still the happiest one today. The income of middle class increases at a faster pace than the cost of living which he pays. The quality consumer goods, which he aspires for are within his reach. He can afford the cost of essential commodities. The people of middle class are able to save some portion of their income and invest it for profit. They get reasonable return out of it. They are spending that amount for improving their standard of living, good food and education of children. That amount also meets their other needs like house, higher education and marriages of children. The present growing economy of the country, trend of globalization, progress in foreign trade and business have made the market competitive and goods cheaper. The first beneficiary of it is a man of middle class who is the major consumer of household goods today in the Indian market. A middle class grows the things or the income through various means by investing his small money. He is t hardly running into major loss. Marginal loss, if it does occur, does not give major setback to him. His tax amount is small which is t adjustable with his income and routine expenditure. People of middle class are either government servants or they are working in private I sector. Indian economy is growing well and the salaries of all the employees is being enhanced from time to time. The increased money, which he gets, meets his new requirement. He does not suffer much. The requirements of the people of, middle class are of routine nature. Many items for which subsidies are prevailing for the poor are commonly being used by the middle class. They are also getting consumable items through co-operative societies and super markets at cheaper rates. They are benefited in many ways at par with poor people, which is helping in balancing their budget. The parameters of 0 his income, expenditure, desires and essentially are limited. He I generally need reasonable quality of food, cloth, house and t entertainment, which he is managing even today. He being and educated person believes less in superstition, old social traditions and customs. He is spending the money on social ceremonies economically and well within his reach. The middle class generally comes from that segment of society which believes in unity and neighbourhood.
History reveals that the people of middle class have always been revolutionary for achieving justice. Most of the freedom fighters were out of the middle class families. Most of the recipients of national awards have been from middle class right from freedom movement till today. There was a great contribution from the people of middle class for all national causes where they showed a high degree of sacrifice, courage and bravery. Elimination of strong British rule from India and victory in various wars which broke out after independence are the examples which were achieved by virtue of their sacrifice. Those patriots have already been enlisted in the books of Indian history.
The middle class is facing numerous problems. Unemployment is a major problem for them due to shortage of jobs in Government as well as in private sector. A number of youth, who are well educated and holding various technical degrees, are roaming here and there joblessly. There is a frustration among them due to unemployment. A few of them are involving themselves due to compulsion in criminal activities. The government needs to create more employment opportunities for the youth. The modernization as well as expansion of industries and liberalization in the national policy for self-employment is the better answer to minimise this problem. A strong political will is also required for sorting out the problem of unemployment in the country. The political front for middle class is also not very bright. Country’s politics is being dominated by the people of higher classes and criminals, who are muscling in and staking their claims in politics. Big business houses and people from political hereditary succession are trying to dominate for governance. There is very narrow space in this field for the people of middle class. The middle class is not looking much towards politics due to these very reasons. Instead it is either doing job or small business by investing its earnings and is getting a handsome return out of it. Due to slash-down in the interest rates, it is badly suffering and is worried in view of his forthcoming liabilities. The middle class is facing major security problem due to acute criminality prevailing these days in the society. A man of upper class can manage his security being himself financially well and can afford the expenditure in this aspect. A poor man has nothing to lose and he does not need much security. The most sufferer and helpless is the middle class which is losing its wealth in various incidents of robbery in the absence of adequate security arrangements.
The condition of middle class must be improved. Essential commodities and the articles of daily use required for his comforts should be made cheap, and easily available. The government should make free medical facilities and education for the children of this class at least upto basic standard. The liability of taxes for salaried class should be lightened. Their salary should be increased timely for meeting their essential requirements.
