The Night Before the Examination
The question paper was right there, but the words were dancing in front of my eyes. I could not understand what. that black and white jumbled-up rigmarole was. Suddenly I realized it was my mathematics question paper. I knew it — every single question — but my hands felt so heavy and my fingers were like thumbs.
I could not lift up my pen to write. When I finally managed to do so, there was no ink in the pen. Frantically, I searched for the spare one, but it was not there. I looked at the clock — there were only ten minutes left and already the invigilator was descending on me, stretching out her hand to take my answer sheet. “No… no, please,” I cried desperately. “Please let me do this problem…. “
Just then, the bell rang, signalling the end of the examination. There was a great scraping of chairs and a babble of voices as my fellow students began to leave the hall. I shrank in my seat, groaning piteously, with the sound of the bell growing louder and louder in my ears. But the teacher was shaking me violently, forcing me to get up, get up, get up!
I opened my eyes to broad daylight. Oh my God! It was the day of the mathematics exam, but I had nothing to worry about. There was my mother, smiling down at me reassuringly. I had studied hard and was confident of doing well. What I had just undergone was merely a bout of the night-before-the-examination fever!
