Nuclear Weapons
After the Second World War, it has taken many years for the countries ravaged by the war to rise up and build themselves up. But the fear of war has made nations to get set and be prepared for another. Despite the desire to maintain peace these nations started making more and more powerful and destructive weapons.
Hence nuclear power focuses the attention on a country of all the big powers. India is a peace loving nation and from time immemorial has been stressing and maintaining its policy of non-alignment but still we cannot be out of the cold war.
Therefore, it has been insisted that India should manufacture nuclear weapons otherwise she will be in trouble in the near future.
The border countries of India, like Pakistan and China are net friendly with India China is a nuclear power and Pakistan is making efforts to make nuclear weapons. Then they will be a threat to India.
No doubt India has implicit faith in her non-violence policy. Hut the manufacture of nuclear weapons does vet mean that they will be used against any other nation. Our defenses are to be strengthened and many steps are being taken for that. No country in the world can make use of nuclear weapons for it will result in its own destruction. These weapons are meant to create a sense of fear and awareness in the minds of aggressive nations.
India cannot spend huge sums of money on nuclear weapons for Indian people are poor and underfed and Indian industries are so under developed. So the antagonists of nuclear weapons say that those funds should be diverted towards the economic progress of the country.
But the defence of a country is more important than economic progress. Without national security economic-security will be of no use
Some are afraid that India may be trapped into the nuclear race. This fear is baseless for when every nation wants to become a nuclear power, it will not affect any nation which strives to be a nuclear power.
It cannot also be said that the nuclear power will pollute the atmosphere for the atmospheric pollution is already there and this cannot be checked by giving up nuclear projects.
When all around us, the race for nuclear weapon is raging ahead, nothing will be gained by keeping quiet Therefore India will be in a more secure position if she has nuclear weapons. This will not affect very much her economic progress for the nuclear power can be used not only for destruction but also for construction.
