Digital technology has revolutionized the information and entertainment industries. The digital gadgets like computers, laptops, CDs, software, mobile, calculators etc. are most common aids of today’s life. The fields of communication, defense, education, medicine and other sciences heavily depend on digital inputs. It is truly an extension of the human brain.
Until two decades ago India was unfamiliar with computers. Then, Rajiv Gandhi took over as the youngest Prime Minister of the country. He knew the power and the scope of the digital technology. His efforts resulted in computer education getting introduced at a large scale as curriculum in schools and colleges. It changed the giant of India by helping it emerge as an IT and knowledge of the world.
A computer is a hardware and software combination device that functions on electronic digital system. It stores information, data or other inputs on magnetic tapes or CDs, analyses and retrieves the same whenever required. The computer has made the tasks of multiple calculations, data processing, record keeping analyzing etc. very easy for us Its capacity to store information and the speed of calculation is incredible. The accuracy and reliability are almost perfect.
The computers have entered almost every field of life and human activity. They have become vital tools of various services, offices, banks, business establishments, research centres, railways, defence, medical centres, crime detection works, communication, media, education, entertainment, sports etc. Modern radars, missiles, rockets, space craft, military and civilian aircraft use digital technology for accuracy, remote control and cutting edge advantages. The entertainment industry has been a big gainer.
The digitalization has resulted in crystal clear audio-visuals on TV and cinema screens. Ever new varieties of video games keep the imagination of the youngsters engaged. Designing and the art of animation have undergone unbelievable transformation with computers. They have gained limitless possibilities.
The field of telecommunication is the biggest gainer. Computers are connecting people so closely that world is now a global village. India has become a BPO/KPO destination. Our lives have become so digital that even our language has changed. It is now all about up linking, downloading, surfing, internet, websites, chat rooms, modems, CDs, networking, video gaming and conferencing, SMSing, MMS, Laptops, e-mail or voice mail, ATM, Google, chips, blogs etc. Today computers make pages and edit books, periodicals and newspapers. Now we can use our laptop or notebook computer to hook into any phone outlet and attach to networks at home, exchange, e-mail etc. Bookings or reservations, banking or shopping can be done through computers. The computer indeed is a magic device.
It stores signals in the binary form of 0 and 1 or a combination of 0 and 1; or 0-0, 0-1-1-0 etc. Those two digits weave the entire computer magic. The digital technology has some negative points as well. Sometimes it bungles creating a massive mess. It is prone to computer virus and cyber crimes. Its efficiency can take away human jobs creating unemployment. But its advantages far outweigh the dangers.
The newer and newer generations of computers with more storage capability, speedier, more powerful, lighter and smaller is size are in the making. The computers are truly shaping the destiny of the mankind.
