Animals Heave a Sigh of Relief
The issue of a ban on animal sacrifices and the Supreme Court’s order to strictly, implement the ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Act, has given the hapless animals a much-needed respite from harsh and cruel treatment meted out to them.
Since time immemorial animals have been subjected to heart-rending cruelty. Animal slaughter for religious purposes is rampant in all parts of India. People try to appease God by sacrificing animals choosing to be ignorant about the fact that God can never be happy about cruelty inflicted by man on his creations. Apart from religious sacrifices animals are killed recklessly for their hides, bones, flesh, etc.
Statistics reveal that the trade of animal products has skyrocketed in recent times. Besides, animals arc used very commonly for experiments and testing in laboratories. Perhaps, the so called ‘Superior Species’ have forgotten that man and animals have been created to coexist. By killing and being cruel to animals, man is tampering with ecological balance. Many rare species of animals have already become extinct.
There is urgent need for society to wake up to the fact that animal need protecting and preserving. Homes should be provided for stray animals. Children must be taught not to hurt stray cats and dogs. Beasts of burden should not be made to carry back-breaking loads. Wild animals must be provided safe habitats in sanctuaries and reserves.
The order issued by the Supreme Court is a step in the right direction. However, it should not be allowed to merely remain an order on paper. The implementation of this mammoth task requires perseverance and sincerity. Public opinion must be mobilized to implement the spirit of this law. Let us all join hands to preserve the remaining fauna. After all, they are a part of the food chain that keeps us alive.
