The Egyptian Pyramids
Ancient Egyptians built the pyramids as tombs for their Pharoalis or kings as they believed in life after death. The mummified bodies of the pharaohs were placed in it.
Unarguably, the most famous pyramids in the world are the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. They arc a group of three pyramids built in the year 2560 BC. The desert of Giza lies on the outskirts of Cairo, on the western bank of the River Nile.
The largest of the three, the Great Pyramid of Khufu also called Cheops, stands close to 150m in height and was the tallest structure in the world for 4300 years. The other two pyramids in the complex are the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. The pyramids are built entirely of huge blocks of limestone.
The Pyramids of Giza are incomplete without the mention of the Great Sphinx, a statue of a reclining lion with a human head that stands in the pyramid complex. It is believed to be the largest_ monolith statue in the world.
Although many theories exist about the construction techniques of the pyramids, they are undoubtedly an architectural marvel. It is no wonder then that the Pyramids of Giza arc one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and are today, the only ones remaining.
