World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The idea behind this is to stimulate awareness about the environment and enhance political attention and public action.
World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city and addresses different issues. The topic for WED 2006 was ‘Deserts and Desertification’ the slogan being ‘Don’t desert dry lands’ while the topic for 2007 was ‘Melting Ice — a Hot Topic?’ The slogan for 2008 was ‘CO2, Kick the Habit’ and the theme for WED 2009 was ‘Your Planet Needs You – Unite to Combat Climate Change’. This day is celebrated in June and the activities last for about a week. Time and time again, it is being reiterated that we need to save the world by saving our natural resources, conserving water, electricity and fuel. We are also told to reduce pollution- air, water or noise pollution. The recent fear is that of Global Warming — a term having to do with the slow increase of the Earth’s temperature. Global warming may become a problem for the world and has already been linked to floods and other types of storms.
Many of us know that we have to take steps now to save the environment so that the future generations can survive. However, all people are still not aware and the World Environment Day is one step to create that awareness which is very crucial to our planet.
